Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, VickyM, 6H —— vickym @ 1:13 pm

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was also known as Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869 in Porbandar which is currently Gujarat. Gandhi went to the University College in London to study law. In 1891 he went back to India and started a law practice in Bombay, which is currently Mumbai. He went to Durban. He was in Southern Africa for about 20 years. When he was in South Africa he got beaten for throwing out his I.D. that showed he was an Indian. He taught about the nonviolent resistance movement too. During The Boer War Gandhi controlled the Red Cross Unit for the British Army. On January 20, 1948 there was an attempt to assassinate Gandhi but it didn’t work, but it worked on January 30, 1948. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the “Indian Leader” was assassinated. That was the end of this great man’s life. During this project, I learned how to make a hyperlink and how to skim Internet websites. I also learned how to copy and paste from a Word Processor.

A Space Mission To Pluto

Filed under: 6H Newsbreak, Newsbreak - Week 1, International Newsbreak, VickyM, 6H —— vickym @ 4:23 pm

On January 19, 2006 at 2:00pm a space probe started it’s 3 billion mile journey to Pluto. It left the Earth going 36,000 mph. It was powered by 24 lbs. of plutonium. It was supposed to reach Jupiter in about a year. The space probe will use the gravity of Jupiter like a catapult to get some speed. Because of the distance the scientists will not be able to be given any information about Pluto until July, 2015. The trip is going to take about a decade. I found this interesting because I never knew it was possible to go to Pluto!

I found the information for this article at http://www.foxnews.com

The Suez Canal by Vicky M.

Filed under: Suez Canal, VickyM, 6H —— vickym @ 5:20 pm

Did you know that the location of the Suez canal is in the northeastern corner of Africa and the corner of southwestern Asia? The Suez Canal is a shortcut for ships so they don’t have to go all the way around the continent of Africa. The Suez Canal is the longest canal in the world with no locks. It has no locks because the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Suez almost have the same water level. About 25,000 ships pass though the canal each year. Some people hope by 2010 supertankers will be able to pass without unloading part of what they have into another boat and stopping at the end to pick it up. A Suez Canal company is supposed to operate it for 99 years. A canal is a large waterway that is manmade.

The Amazing Suez Canal

Filed under: Suez Canal, VickyM, KelleyL, 6H —— vickym @ 11:13 pm

Can you believe that The Suez Canal is 120 miles long? Well it is. An amazing fact about The Suez Canal is that about 25,000 ships pass though it every year. The maximum depth of the canal is 23 meters allowing ships a maximm drought of 62 feet. In case you don’t know what a drought is, it is the length from the bottom of a boat to the bottom of the canal. Many, many people from Asia used to have to sail all around Africa to be able to trade with Europe. The Canal connects two parts the north and south ends of the Bitter Lake. Now because that is connected it links the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.

Where Would I Go???

If I could choose to go to any place in the world it would be Europe. I would go Europe because I would love to take a tour. I would love to see The Leaning Tower of Piza and The Eiffel Tower. I would stay there for a month if I could.
