Indira Gandhi

Indira Nehru Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917. She was the only child of Jawaharlal and Kamala Nehru. Her parents inspired her. Indira Gandhi rose to power and became the prime minister. She dedicated her life to India. She wouldn’t let India down no matter what the problems or challenges. She started politics when she was twelve. When she was twelve the British ruled India. Congress workers from India didn’t know when the British would arrest them or if they would search their homes. Later they worried a lot so they formed the Monkey Brigade. In 1938 Indira joined the Indian Congress Party. She later was sent to jail only once from September 11, 1942 until May 13, 1943. In the year 1947 India won its independence back. In that same year, Indira’s father became the new prime minister of India. Indira’s father was the prime minister until 1965. That is year he died. Her mother died a few years before in 1936.In 1959 Gandhi was elected the fourth woman president. When her father died the new prime minister was a male named Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastri died in 1966, when he did Indira became the prime minister again. In 1975 Gandhi was found guilty of breaking the laws of their voting system, also in 1977 the indian people voted Indira Gandhi out of office. Later in 1980 she resigned her duty of prime minister of India. Sadly the famous Indira Nehru Gandhi was assassinated by her own body guards on October 31, 1984.
I learned a lot about Gandhi. What suprised me the most is that her guards assassinated her. This is where I got my information from http://departments.kings.edu/womens_history/igandhi.html
