Whether he is sitting in his celebrity chair or on a piece of paper, everyone know’s the cool cat with the name Garfield!

Thanks to Jim Davis’s funny imagination Garfield has became a kitty with fame! Not to mention, the producer’s of Garfield The Movie and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties also help boost him to become that cat we all know and love!

So remember, garfield is more then just a cat, okay?

Look at that thing!

Filed under: Animals, SaraH, 6V, Science —— sarah @ 12:09 pm

You look down and see an animal that is mostly clear. A small tail tucks in as the little creature squiggles around a bit. After minute’s of staring you finally recognize it as a shrimp. A ghost shrimp to be exact.

Ghost shrimps are peaceful creatures that are a good choice for aquariums. Although ghost shrimp are small so putting them in an aquarium with fish mean’s you’re taking a risky chance. You better put many hiding spots if you’re putting them with fish!

Ghost shrimps are clear making part’s in there body visible. If you look closely you might see the food they ate {Sorry for the grossness}. These shrimp also have ten pair’s of legs. The first four include tiny claws on the ends.

Ghost shrimp’s are amazing animal’s in many ways. You should go get one and observe it’s fine details. Good luck!

Goodbye Everything of Sixth Grade.

Filed under: Classroom Happenings, SaraH, 6V —— sarah @ 11:45 pm

We’ve had good times, and bad times in sixth grade. We’ve had time’s where we all laugh, and time’s where someone is toast. Anyways, we’ve all had many times, and they all are important in their own special way.

I’d just like to thank everyone for making all those “time’s” happen whether they were good or bad.

Also, I hope everyone has a good summer and I’ll see alot of you next year!

**Ps: This will be my last post on Room 613 Student Blogs. Thanks Mr. Hetherington for making the blog in the first place. =’)

Why Me??

Why Me?

By Allie B

Every day when you walk into school you trip up the steps and ask, “Why me?”

Every day some one makes fun of you, you ask “Why me”

Every night your dinner’s cold and no ones home and you ask “Why me?’

Every dream is a night mare waiting to come true and you ask “Why me?”

Every step aches from sleeping on the floor and you ask “Why me?”

Every smile is crooked, bent and ugly, and you ask “Why me?”

And every boy seams to hurt you and you ask, “Why me ?”

And every girl seams to hate you so, ask “Why me?”

Every thing goes wrong and you ask, “Why me?”

But then you stop tripping, and there are no teasing voices, but “Why?”

And dinners hot and the tables crowded, but, “Why?’

And at night it’s soft beds and sweet dreams, but “Why?’

And your smile doesn’t seem as bad, but “Why?’

Boys are nice and no more rumors are spread, but “Why?”

And everything is right. Why? Because you’ve got a friend who takes you into her house, her family, under her wing. You’re safe, she saves you.

There is someone everywhere who experiences, “Why me?”’s and there are friends who help them, so be a friend and stop “why me” ’s from hitting your school.

Live Each Day……

By Allie B

Live each day like the sun won’t come up again,

Live each day like the world will blow tomorrow,

Live each day like you were dying

Live each day to it’s fullest

Life doesn’t have a purpose with- out the kid that sits behind you just to make you crack up!

Live each day like it will be your last laugh

Live each day like the person you love most will disappear

Live each day for the smiles will fade

Live each day peacefull and happy

Live each day until it’s your last!

Dedicated to all those who take their life for granted.

The Ultimate Loch Ness Monster!

Nessy — The Ultimate Loch Ness Monster

The ultimate Loch Ness monster otherwise known as Nessy is a tale that has been going on for years.

First we’ll start off talking about Nessy’s appearance. Nessy is supposedly supposed to look like a salamander kind of with a long neck, chubby body, four fins, and a tail.

So far their is no proof of Nessy’s existence but many people claim to have seen him or her but they do know where Nessy lives, that place would be Loch Ness!

Deciding if Nessy is real or not is hard to decide, especially when you see how many people claim to have once seen the beautiful monster and some evidence they have found.

Here is tooth supposedly belonging to Nessy:

But then again, their are many things that could be mistaken for this creature such as in this case. The following picture was believed to be actual proof of nessy for quite some time but then one person found out that this was an imposter. Very sadening if you ask me!

Using this we can now say that how do we know that these people arent lying about what they saw or maybe someone is setting an imposter. Plus, this tale has been carried on for years, I would think that Nessy would have died by now. Unless, maybe, just maybe Nessy is breeding! Plus, dont you think that if Nessy was real someone other then best friends that could be setting a scam would have seen him or her by now? I mean, where could the tooth had come from? A dinasaur perhaps?

Is Nessy real or fake? What do you think?

Student Council by AllieB

Filed under: Classroom Happenings, AllieB, 6V —— allieb @ 10:15 pm

As student council is coming to end and the new elections are being held next year I think. I better inform you all about it!

Student council is an excellent program. That is why you should run for it! The awesome activities after school are sure to keep you busy! There are also meetings every other Friday morning. We also hold dances, activity nights and fundraisers, such as the candy stick sale. Council members help collect food for drives and help out with things such as the upcoming art show. Also we get into most sponsored dances free!

There is also our director, Mr Jollif! He is very nice and fun and keeps us all in line. He organizes our field trips to conferences, our fun dances and activity nights. He also greets us every morning with an announcement sheet. Some(times) we can talk on the morning annoucements. Mr J also goes and gets us donuts, o.j. and bagels. All in all Mr J rocks!

Last but not least is the meetings. Each meeting is semi packed with fun ideas and thoughts for the up coming events. We discuss the last event we held and talk about how much $money$ we made. We have so much fun, sometimes we goof around but you didn’t hear it from me! Student council is the greatest activity in school and keeps you always busy!

So next year I hope you run for the fun and fantastic Student Council!

Barbaro the winner of the Kentucky Derby broke his legand had 23 screws put in during his 5 hour surgery! Barbaro is supended in a warm water pool during recovery and will stay there as long as possible. They might have put him down since the surgery cost a little under 1 million dollars and he will suffer much pain at times, not to mention the risk of disease. They have decided to keep him alive because he is an expensive horse and can be kept for breeding. Although he may not live ( he only has a 50% chance of surviving) he legend will. The day started and he was ready for the race. He had already won the Kentucky Derby! A false start was called on him. He must have been nervous and excited all at once, and could have popped the bone slightly in the false start. As he made his way out his was some 8/13 around the track when the jockey must have heard a pop! The jockey stopped him from going on(this is only what I have heard from the onlookers ) “they saved his live” some one said! But he is alive and now is recovering!

Oliver Twist

Filed under: Book Reviews, Classroom Happenings, SaraH, 6V —— sarah @ 10:45 am

Oliver Twist

Just recently in the sixth grade chorus we finished performing the play, Oliver Twist.

Oliver Twist is about a little boy named Oliver who is an orphan who finds himself living in a work house owned by Mr. Bumble but after Oliver asks for more gruel he gets transfered to an undertaker. Oliver doesnt seem to like his new home with undertakers so he runs away and is found on the street by a boy named Jack Dawkins, who offers him shelter in a house owned by Fagin. Fagin is a man who trains orphans to pick pockets for him. Oliver stays with them for awhile but once he goes on his first “mission” involving stealing a hankerchief Oliver becomes scared and runs away. Then he is found by owner of the hankerchief and a man named Mr. Brownlow, who takes care of Oliver for awhile while he is fainted but then Mr. Brownlow’s and Oliver’s relationship is ruined when a man named Bill Sikes finds him and takes him back to Fagins hideout. Will Oliver be happy to be back with Fagin? Will he want to return to Mr. Brownlow? Will Oliver become a pick pocket master? Read the book, watch another play or see the movie of Oliver Twist to find out what happens.

Anyways, It was a blast, however, we had a little problem with opening the curtains but eventually the whole play went good and everyone pulled off a great performance!

The Three Gorges Dam!

Filed under: Three Gorges Dam, MichelleS, 6V —— michelles @ 1:46 pm

The Three Gorges Dam is located in China and is one of those things where it is getting built and yet some people are still very unhappy with it. I know I dont like the idea at all! Some people say “well it’s already about half built and it would be a waste of millions of dollars to stop now and we would go back to polluting the air with nuclear power plants.” The Three Gorges Dam is designed to generate 18.2 million kilowatts of electricity. That is 1/7 of Chinas total electricity for a year and it equals to 18 nuclear power plants. It will reduce air pollution that would have been made from nuclear power plants and it will control down river flooding. One thing that most people like about the dam is that it lets boats and ships go 1500 miles further inland. Others say “this is damaging the environment just stop now.” The dam will kill many animals including birds and fish. Also the dam will put 150,000 acres under water that include 140 towns, 320 villages, 1500 factories and many historical sites. So as this is all going under water more then 1 million people will be relocated.
So after all there is a debate some people may like the idea of finishing the dam and some may hate the idea. “I hate the idea to finish the dam it will put so many historical sites under water and then the history will be gone!” explained Heather. “Plus”, added Allie “it will cost around 32 billion dollars and it may not stop flooding”. “It will let boats move 1500 miles further inland, but it will slow them down because they will have to go around the dam in the locks or elevator.”

Lion King 2 Summary

Filed under: Movies, SaraH, 6V —— sarah @ 8:55 am

Lion King 2 Summary

Director: Darrel Rooney / Co-Director: Rob LaDuca

Voice Cast: Matthew Broderick (Simba), Neve Campbell (Kiara), Andy Dick (Nuka), Robert Guillaume (Rafiki), James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Moira Kelly (Nala), Nathan Lane (Timon), Jason Marsden (Kovu), Suzanne Pleshette (Zira), Ernie Sabella (Pumbaa), Michelle Horn (Young Kiara)

As we all know, The Lion King left off with a new cub born. Her name, Kiara. In the beginning they show Kiara growing up. Being a adventurous and very curious cub. She was thrilled alot just by chasing grasshoppers! Although, Simba was very overprotective in the movie. He even gave her “guards”, Timon and Pumbaa, as Zazu was his own. Also, Simba tries hard to follow in his fathers paw prints.

Later on in the story, Kiara manages to escape from Timon and Pumbaa and explore the Pride Lands on her own. She finds Kovu on her adventure, a young male lion, like any other lion, persay, except he was one that was banished from the Pride Lands like the rest of his family. But to Kiara, that didnt matter. She thought that they were all equal and all the same. If only the others could see that too…

Kovu’s mother dislikes Kiara and her family very much, for they are the generations of Lion that have thrown them out of the family for obvious reasons. Simba forbids Kiara from having contact (friendship) with Kovu. Kovu’s mother does the same, untill she realizes that this may give her the chance she has been waiting for. Think about it, Kovu could get into Kiara’s family, “become one of them”, and then turn on them. That way her son (Kovu) could become the King.

Will Kovu take over the pride lands? What will happen to Kovu and Kiara’s love? Will It fade away? To find out go watch the movie, and remember like It says in the Lion King Two song I posted earlier, “Love is never wrong and so It never dies,” Think about that and I’m sure It will give you a big hint to what the movie is about!

Thank you so much to this website for alot of the Information and Pictures!

Currently in Language Arts class we received our pen pal letters back from Italy. Most of us, if not all have made our pen pal letter response over the vacation. Now, we are all working on making a poem to also send to our pen pals. The poem is called a “Cinquain”. One of the highlights of a Cinquain was that in my class alot of the kids were making a connection of how Cinquain and Mark Twain kind of rhyme. I thought that was kind of funny. Anyways, I’m sure some of the sixth grade students will post there poem later, like I am going too. So look forward to all those Cinquains!

One more thing, If anybody out there ever needs the pattern on how to make a Cinquain I’ll post it here.

A Moment With McMeow…

McMeow, Is my old kitty, Molly McMeow. She is very old, older then most of us. Molly is 15 years old and is Calico. I decided to make an Interview with my ever so “exciting” friend. Enjoy.

Q: Molly, What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: *Meow* Well Sara, my basic life, is eating, sleeping, drinking and an accasional walk around the yard.

Q: What’s it like being the oldest cat in the house?

A: Powerful, but not so powerful. I can be the loveable grandma in the house that we all love, but I get taken advantage of, I mean, Can’t everybody run faster than their grandma? Lets just say, It’s hard to get disciplined by me.(No Offence) *Meow*

Q: Do calico cats really have more fun?

A: Of Course. Definetly!

Q: Molly, Do think your smarter then us from being so old?

A: What do you think. Lets just leave It at that, hun.

Q: Have you ever wanted to be younger again?

A: Yes, Very much. I’d like to be able to play again, and get wild and have fun. Instead of sleeping all day! *Meow*

Q: Do you have any friends here at Sara’s house?

A: Sorta, Most of the cats here are younger so they arent interested in doing “old kitty” stuff with me, but I manage to have fun with them sometimes.

Thats about it, Thank you for your participation.

A Note From Molly: Hello Friends. My name is Molly. I hope you have a great day, and no, this was not really me answering these questions, It was my agent, okay!

His daughter was the first woman prime minister in India. Also his wife Kasturbaitried to help the poor in India and died in gandhis arms.

Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. When I first studied Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi. well he was just another person. Then I realized as I kept reading about him that he was a very good leader and I understood what was so special about him. The thing that made him so special was that he was a loyal and great leader. Also he believed in indian freedom. Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi wanted all of india to be ruled by the indians’. mohandas died on January 30, 1948 when he was illegidly shot 3 times in the knee. Mother Teresa

Filed under: History of India, NatePD, 6V —— natepd @ 7:23 pm

India’s poverty is wide spread, and is very bad in the city of Calcutta. There is very little medical care, poor sanitation, and high rates of death. One individual who dedicated her life to trying to help the people of Calcutta, was Mother Teresa, known as The Saint of The Gutters. Mother Teresa knew from the time that she was twelve that she wanted to be a nun, and when she turned 18 she left her home in Albania, and joined an order of nuns in Ireland.

Mother Teresa was sent to Calcutta to spread the word of God. She was a missionary, and a missionary’s job is to convince people to follow the ways of a religion. When Mother Teresa saw the horrible conditions she vowed to spend her life trying to improve the existence in Calcutta!

Mother Teresa traveled the world and met with politicians in many countries, trying to get their support to help the people of India. Presidents, world leaders, and even the Pope recognized her unbelievable dedication, and belief that god would rescue the people in Calcutta.
Mother Teresa was honored through out her life time as she was given awards from different parts of the globe, but all that Mother Teresa wanted was to improve the life of the people of Calcutta, and she never sought any reward for herself.

Pakistan splits!

Filed under: History of India, MichelleS, 6V —— michelles @ 7:52 pm

The British created a country called Pakistan for the Muslims. Pakistan had two regions West Pakistan and East Pakistan. They are separated by 1,100 miles of Indian Territory. East Pakistan separated from the country, causing a civil war. India joined the conflict on the side of the East Pakistan. In 1971 East Pakistan became the independent country of Bangladesh. Bangladesh had many reasons for separating from Pakistan. Two of them are that the two countries are very different because Pakistan is a mountainous country with many ethnic groups, while most people in Bangladesh share the same culture. In fact about 98% of the people of Bangladesh speak Bengali. However the second is that by 1970 East Pakistan paid more taxes than West Pakistan because the government was dominated by West Pakistan. Bangladesh has some of the greatest challenges of any country in the world. It is the ninth most populated country in the world. Also did you know that it has half the population of the United States, but they are squeezed into an area that is smaller then Wisconsin?

Hannah Montana

A new Disney Channel show premiered not to long ago. Below is an overall review of what it is about.

Miley Cyrus stars as Hannah Montana, as the new preteen who lives a secret life as a pop star. Cryus’s real life dad, country cooner Billy Ray Cyrus, plays her dad and manager. Miley just moved from Tennessee as a county singer and now had to adapt to life in Malibu. The show includes original music recored from its star, Miley. Oliver Okem (Mitchell Musso) is one of Miely’s friends that actually knows her big secret. Lily Tuscott (Emily Osment) stars as one of Miley’s friends. Hannah has an older brother, Jackson (Jason Earles) who needs to keep the secret. The show has ordered over twenty episodes of Hannah Montana. How far do you think Miley will go? To the top? To the bottom? Will she be the next Hillary Duff? Raven? Lindsay? Only time will tell. Just for a closing quote, Miley is “In this thing deep now, she’s in the water, and she’d got to sink or swim.”

Also, Even If Hannah Montana doesnt seem very good to you, watch it anyways, from what I heard alot of people say that it’s better than what it sounds like.

March, 28 2006, our school’s 6th grade went to go see a play as a field trip along with many more schools. The play was based on the book The Giver. I would say my favorite part of the play was when Jonas first saw color, because I thought it was really cool how just all of a sudden the color all around on the stage turned red. I also liked it because of the creativity the crew did with the lights. Just to shock people they changed the lights red for one second. The drama was great, the make up was great, [and] I loved it.

When he is skipped for assignments he is even more fretful! Then suddenly as the apology leaves the head elders mouth he began to relax. He was selceted to be the new Reciever of Memory. He goes through painfull, endless training.

It has now been a year and Jonas has witnessed many different memories, and his father releasing a newborn. Jonas is horriefied of this process and to comort him and put him at ease he stays with the Giver. They make a plan for Jonas to run away to “Elsewhere” and his memories will be transmitted to the community. Jonas is ready to leave the next day when a voice on the loud speaker tells [him] that Gabe will be released. Jonas steals Gabe, extra left overs from dwellings around the community and his father’s scooter. They reach the other side of the river and then walk and walk and walk. India project on New Delhi

Filed under: History of India, MaryP, 6V —— maryp @ 7:32 pm

My teacher told everyone to pick a place in India, and I picked New Delhi. New Delhi is a city that defies a one-line description as the capital of the world’s largest democacy. Delhi is 32,87,267 sq. km of India’s fantastic variety compressed into 1483 sq. km. Delhi is true cosmopolitan city always on the move. Delhi is also a deram city for visitors looking for items of handicrafts. Many wildlife sancturaies, heritage sites, hill stations, and quaint little towns sorround Delhi.

The History on New Delhi is that the first person to find the city is a British person, and it was in 1911. New Delhi is the first city that had an independence war in 1857. The Delhi’s was [a] thorn in the eyes of the British. New Delhi is one of the oldest cities in the world.

Where I got my information was that I went to Google and typed in New Delhi, and I also typed in History on New Delhi. Then I looked around for good information on New Delhi, then I found this information.

Nascar News: Jeff Gordon Vs. Matt Kenseth

Recently, The race at Bristol raceway was held. The race went somewhat smoothly. Then It was about the last lap, this would decide the winners of the race, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth were all up front, as well as some others. Anyways, Jeff Gordon was fourth, while Matt Kenseth was very close behind him. Gordon and Kenseth had make some contact during the other parts of the race but not much, they finally were very close. Matt Kenseth got closer to Gordon and then he ended up bumping him and Jeff Gordon swirled some and got behind in the race. He went from fourth to twenty-first. Luckily, nor Matt or Jeff won the race, Kurt Busch won. I remember watching this race very intently, then I watched as they showed Jeff, as soon as he got out of the his car he went over to Matt and pushed him. How nice. Then the Security, or Driver Team people came over and seperated them. Later on they showed them both talking. Kenseth claimed that the whole thing was an accident, and that he would have just have beenmad If it happened to him. Gordon, cooled down, didnt seem to say much, but I know he wasnt the happiest camper. Do you think this will damage their friendship?

How To Make A Pixel

How To Make A Pixel Guide

1) To start of you open MS Paint which most computers come with already downloaded in.

2) Take the Magnify glass in paint and on the Left Side Tool Bar a size thing manager will be there. Click Size 8, that way you pixel will end up being easier to see.

3)Next you make the outline of your Pixel. Using the Pencil, with any color you like, start outlining what will become the pixel like the following picture is.

P.S. Try not to get different pencil colors like mine did for the outline. I didnt mean to do that but It lost format when I saved it.

3)Next will be shading. Start with base colors. Then you can go in and add lighter and darker shades to get more of an effect. You can Darken the edges by going a shade darker by going to the top of paint-clicking color-next click Edit Colors-then Define Cutom Colors-then choose the color you want and click Okay. And you’ll have the color you picked. You can also add another outline thats lighter too, and just mess around with it and eventually It’ll look nice. Also, You can add a little white dot on top of the Cherry to add a little extra kick and you can add pink cheeks!

Tamagotchi’s!

Tamagotchi’s

Have you ever wondered what a Tamagotchi is? Well…I’ll tell you! It’s a virtual hand-held pet! You feed them, Play games with them, Give them Time-Outs (HeHe…), Buy items at the shop, Connect them and so much more! When you first get a Tamagotchi you get to set the time and date and then you wait for the Egg to hatch and see If you get a girl or boy. Then you name him or her. I named mine Abby and Alice. If you dont feed them for awhile they can even…Die! But you dont want to that to happen, so always do what the Tamagotchi needs, or else you know what… Eventually, Your Tamagotchi will even evolve and turn into a somewhat new creature (kind of like a Pokemon)! I would say more about Connecting with other Tamagotchi’s but I dont know how to do that exactly yet, because I’m still learning too! Ohh…I almost forgot, I just found out If you leave an older Tamagotchi alone for awhile (1 hour+), It may fly away and never return, dreadful, I know! By the way, there are some Tamagotchi animations below, however, the animations do not happen to all Tamagotchi’s, there are many paths a Tamagotchi could take in terms of evolving. Enjoy!

Information From My Mind.

P.S. How do I link to my mind?

The history behind the Indus river!!!

In 2000 B.C. the first civilization was formed along the Indus river. It was known to be the first earliest civilization in the world. The word Indus is the English name that came from Sinthos in Greek and Sindus in Latin. The Indus river is a natural boundary between Afganistan and Iran. The Indus river supplies many large industries and is the main supply of fresh water in Pakistan. It is considered very sacred in the Hindu religion. It is known to have 2 large cites called: Harppa and Mohenjo Daro, (which is now Pakistan). The river was supported by a base called the Indus Valley Civilzation. The Indus Valley Civilzation is where wheat and barley were grown. There were many animals that were raised in the Indus Valley Civilization. Cotton was grown there too. No one knows when the civilization ended. But it is known that Mohenjo Daro was attacked and destroyed in the mid 2nd millennium bc.

So the first civilization was at 2000bc and the Indus river was very sacred. Also the river had a base and it was called: Indus Valliy Civlivization. My source was:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Indus+river

I got the picture from:http://static.flickr.com/9/16388427_e98ea7006a.jpg

I got this picture from:http://www.ancientindia.co.uk/geography/images/indus_r.jpg

This project enhanced my thinking and google searching skills. I would never have known how important this river was if I had not done this project. The most important fact about the Indus River as I told you was that it was one of the first civilizations in the world. And that is my history of India project.

The History of India: The First Indian Civilization

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, EricG, 6V —— ericg @ 1:07 pm

I’m sure you know some of America’s history, but do you know about India’s history? In this post you will be learning about some of India’s history.

About 4000 years ago in 2000 B.C. the first Indian civilization built cities along the Indus River valley in present day Pakistan. There are three different names for the first Indian civilization. The first one is the Harappan Civilization because it was named after the city of Harappa. The second one is the Indus-Sarasvati civilization because a lot of the features of it were discovered at the banks of the Sarasvati River. The last name is the Sindhu-Sarasvati civilization because of the Sanskrit name of the Indus River, the Sindhu. This civilization was also along the Ghaggar-Hakra River as well as the Indus River. The people of this civilization could read just like us and they spoke in Dravidian language. A lot about this civilization is still unknown. Archaeologists only have deciphered a small portion of this language. They traded with Mesopotamia, Southern India, Afghanistan, and Persia for gold, silver, copper, and turquoise. They were the first people to grow cotton to produce cloth. Also they grew wheat, barley, peas, melons, and Sesame.

Doing this project added to my previous knowledge because I learned a lot about the first civilization of India. I learned that researching online is easy as long as you use the right key words. I learned how to get back into a post if you haven’t finished it. I realized that learning about other places around the world can be more interesting when you learn about them online. Finally I learned how to put in a picture because I wasn’t exactly sure how to.

So now you know about some of India’s history, about the first Indian civilization. I hope you enjoyed it.

Indira Gandhi

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, EmelieV, 6V —— emeliev @ 5:43 pm

Born November, 19, 1917 Indira Gahndi’s political career started when she was just twelve years old. At this time, the British were controlling India, they would regurely arrest members of the Indian National Congress and search their homes. Because of this the Monkey Birgade was formed, this was actually a group of children who warned Congress members in they were to be arrested. Being the Monkey Birgades leader, Indira gave speeches while other children ran messages. People figured the British wouldn’t suspect children to be doing the dangerous work. Finally in 1938, Indira accomplished one of her life long goals and joined the Indian National Congress Party. Four years later she married a journalist, Feroze Gandhi. Shortly after they were married, the couple were thrown into jail by the British, they were charged for rebelling against the British. Indira’s first and only punishment lasted eight months at the Naini National Jail in Allahabad.Indira was released from jail in 1947, when India became independent from the British. During this year, Indira’s father became prime minister of India. Since Indira’s mother had died, Indira usually traveld with her father to meet very high ranking political leaders. This gave her an advantage, because in 1959, Indira became the fourth woman to ever be elected president of the Indian National Congress. Later in 1964, Indira’s father died, a new prime minister, Lal Bahedur Shastri selected Indira to be minister of information and broadcast. This was the fourth most important position with in the Cabinet. When Shastri died unexpectedly two years later, Indira resumed his position as prime minister for the remaining of her term. Amazingly at the next election, Indira became the first ever prime minister of India. Things went pretty smooth for Indira’s first term as prime minister, and when elections came again, Indira was elected once more. Unfortunally in 1975 Indira was found guilty of breaking election laws, she was orderd by the High Court of Allahbadto resign for office. But Indira didn’t give up easily, she declared that India was in a state [of] emergency. This act was basically making herself a dictator, she thought she was helping Indians. But they hated her for it and when elections were held again in 1977 Indira was voted out of office. Many said that her political career was done, but three years later she resumed her ob as prime minister of India. Sadly, on October 31, 1984 Indira’s body guards assasignated her. They said they were avenging the damage done to the Sikh Golden Temple, Indira had orderd the invasion last June because there seemed to be terrorist activity from some of the more extreme Sikhs.

My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people:”Indira said once “those who work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was less competition there.” And Indira did work hard, leading India to be one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Even though Indira was hated by many Indians, she has earned their thanks, leading India through some troubling times, she deserves to be honerd.

This project added to my previous knowledge by informing me of Indira Gandhi’s life, the obstacles she had to overcome in her political career and the reasoning behind the assasignation of Indira Gandhi. It was a very intresting topic and if you want to learn more, check out the websights where I got my information.

More quotes from Indira Gandhi

“We must learn to be still in the midst of activity and to be vibrantly alive in repose.”

“You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.”

Empress of India

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, HeatherA, 6V —— heathera @ 5:35 pm

Indira was born on November 19, 1917 in Allahabad. Her fathers name was Jawaharlal Nehru and her mothers name was Kamala Kaul. Inspired by her parents Indira worked for freedom her entire life. She lived in India but they were considered a minority as the British ruled them at all times. When she was younger she was a very courageous girl. Her family could never know when to expect the next inspection of the British police. At the age of 12 she was already the head of the children’s group. Their purpose was to end the British control of India. And they soon formed what was called the Monkey Birgade. As she delivered speeches the other children’s went around and told the people when they were to be arrested or inspected. Of coarse the British never suspected that children would do such a thing. When Indira got older she married Feroze Gandhi. Her mother died in 1936. In 1947 her father became the prime minister and she became his hostess, 17 years later he died in 1964. In 1959 she became the fourth woman ever elected to be India’s president. In 1966 she was elected prime minister. Then in 1967 she became the first woman ever to lead a democracy. In 1971 she was reelected to campaign with the slogan “Abolish Poverty”. But in 1975 Indira was found guilty of election laws. And in 1977 she was voted out of office. In 1980 she was realected prime minister,at 67 she unfortunately, in 1984, was assassinated by two of her own body guards.

If I had never been assigned this project there would be no way for me to know that Indira Gandhi was even a person let alone only the fourth woman ever elected president in Indea. I never even new there was such a thing as the Monkey Birgade. And I could never have known that she was born in 1917 and sadly killed by her two of her own body guards in 1984.

Growing Some Green

Filed under: History of India, TommyD, 6V —— tommyd @ 11:27 pm

India, 1943- The British were reigning over India, forcing them to do things like carry passes, and not allowing them the same privileges as the British. (they soon left India in 1947) Then when the worst recorded famine in history swept through eastern India, they were totally unprepared. This food shortage was called The Bengal Famine. An estimated total of 4,000,000 people died of starvation in that one year, think of it, in ONE YEAR, alone! It took a long time for them to recover, and that process was sped up by The Green Revolution. The Green Revolution was a combination of more farming agriculture, and improved seeds. The Revolution didn’t start causing dramatic affects until 1967, when they had the technology to genetically improve seeds, and by 1978, most of India was self- sustaining, and was producing enough food for most of it’s people to live happily and healthy.

This paragrapph tought me much about The Green Revolution and the hardships the Indians had to face during the Bengal Famine. I learn
