Gandhi

Filed under: History of India, MadisonH, 6E —— madisonh @ 8:33 pm

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi [lived] October 2,1869 throught January 30,1948 in Gujarat, Indian growing up as a Hindu child in the city of Porbandar. Gandhi was married when he was only 13 to Kasturbhai. She [lived] April 11,1869 through February 22,1944

Gandhi had struggled for independence from the British Empire. Gandhi had became the political leader of India. Gandhi had always wanted freedom cross the world for Hindu’s but Gandhi never thought of violence for solving problems more like nonviolence which led India to independence. He was always a peaceful [and] never wanted violence. Himself and the other Hindu’s were never treated equaly the same as the whites, but Gandhi had changed all that. September 4,1888 at the age of 18 Gandhi went to the University college of Londan to become a barrister. Gandhi had been making his clothes and had been on a strict vegetarian diet and was and still is reconized as the Father of the Nation. Have you been wondering how it all started? Well Gandhi had studied law. After 20 years he started studing law again. he went to India to become there leader. When the Muslim”s and Hindu’s were fighting there had become a great deal of trouble. Gandhi had only wanted peace but he had no choice so he decided not to eat anything till the fighting had stopped. Then the people heard about it and they had stopped fighting because they cared about Gandhi so much and they did not want him to die from starvation. The fighting stopped and Gandhi had started to eat again. Then on January 30,1948 Gandhi had been assasinated. Even though Gandhi is no [longer]here with us, he will always be along our sides!

Gandhi was an amazing man. He was non-violent and wanted people to get along I have never known this much about Gandhi. Well, I never known anything about Gandhi but this is really intersting. Just remember there’s so much more to learn [and] it’s only a mouse click away!

Gandhi

GANDHI

By Robyn S.

Gandhi was born in Porbander,Gujarat, India October 2,1869. He grew up with his parents as slaves. He took school near Rajkot. His father was a prime minister for a local ruler. Gandhi was a great person because he took on ahimsa, that is total non-voilence. Gandhi lead India to an independant world. He led a nation wide campaign for the poor people. Gandhi was assassined on January 30,1948 by Nathuram Godse. Gandhi was walking to a praying meeting right before he got shot. The meeting took place at Birla House in New Delhi. Some called him a leader some probably never even liked him for that matter but hey no one can be liked by everyone. Some that liked him called him Bapu that means father of the nation. Gandhi learned by his own mistakes. Some believe that his last words were “oh god.” Well back to when he was alive he was arrested on March 10th. Gandhi had many principals truth, nonviolence, vegetarianism, brahmacharya, simplicity, and best of all faith. He held campaigns against landlords , he seems very powerful but he’s not. He was an important person though.Gandhi was introduced to Indian issues by Gopal Krishna Gokhale. One of the campaigns were most succsessful it had about 60,000 people there.( now that’s alot of people.)

Well hope this is some help to you.

I learned alot about GANDHI but most of the information was from websites and Mr .Hetherington. This ” project” was supposed to teach kids about Gandhi and maybe it will.

So keep your eyes peeled for more projects so you can learn a thing or two…

The Review of The Giver Play At East Hartford High

Filed under: Book Reviews, The Giver, Classroom Happenings, JabobS, 6E —— jakes @ 10:27 pm

What do you usually think of a book compared to the play? For those of you that saw it, what would you rate it? Our class went on a field trip to see the play, The Giver and we thought there were some positives and negatives about it after we saw it. We had compared it to the book for accuracy, and for any parts missing. First, we found out that 15 out of 18 students liked the book better than the play. The National Theatre Club was on tour, and they had to fit a significant part of The Giver into an 80 minute production. As you know, you wouldn’t be able to fit every detail of The Giver into a play. However, they jumped right into the Ceremony of 12, and there was only 6 people attending. Even the little things, like braids not in Lily’s hair were caught. In the end, they were really rushed and they skipped all of the escape because they said he just left. He had reached Elsewhere in no time and people that never read the book wouldn’t catch on. Despite the negatives, there are positives, and one thing I found they did well was they had really good sound effects. The grabbing of emotion was well done by the Club. A whole play would be so hard to act that some parts are going to have to be skipped. When they took questions, they said sometimes they would alter plays, but most things can’t be changed even though they are. This was a good play to go to, but it could be better.

The Giver Theater Review

Have you ever seen the play, The Giver? If you haven’t here is a review to get you prepared to see it.

The production starts with you entering the room. Then you see the set, which is made up of paintings for backdrops and there are two projectors to show the announcements made by the elders of the community. Then the theater part of the productions begins shortly.

The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who becomes the next reciever of memory. The story is an exciting one, you never know what will happen next.

There were many great features in the play. For instance, the acting and how the actors stayed in character even when it wasn’t there turn to speak. Also, the costumes were grand because they were grey to give a visual that the community can’t see color. Another good thing about the play was that, with the small number of props they had, the production was still very awesome. However, one bad thing about the play was that sometimes It was a little hard to hear what they were saying. Overall, the production was fantastic though!

Now when you go see the play The Giver, you’ll know what to expect about the acting, but the end of the story will remain a surprise!

Today for a feild trip we went to go see The Giver. The book The Giver was writen by Lois Lowry. But we didn’t read the book we saw a play.It was so cool to go see it done out as a play.I couldn’t believe that they could put the book into a play. We saw the play at East Hartford High. The play was performed by theater workers, and they were really good.I loved all of the features of the play too. Like in this one part everytime Jonas saw the color red,it would flash red. It was so cool. Anyway it lasted for about a hour I think. The play was a lot different! They skipped a lot of parts although it was good and funny. Lily was the best, I think, and all of the cast were in the acting business. They all were in the same costumes, and at the end they had little triangles to show that Jonas saw colors. One was red, orange, and another color. They also had slides so they would show the memories. For example, they showed the twin getting “released”. The screen also showed announcements to the community. Overall, it was really good.

India’s Independence

Filed under: History of India, TimB, 6E —— timb @ 10:06 pm

Did you know that India did not always have its independence? In 1619 the British took control of what we know today as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The British made India use English as their language and took away many Hindu customs. India tried to fight back in 1857, but the East India Company fell apart and the British maintained control.

Even though India was contolled by the British the economy continued to grow and prosper. Railroads were set up and trade increased. But one of the worse things the British did to India’s society was if something went wrong in India they blamed it on the Muslim population.  This caused conflict between the Muslims and the Hindus within India.

In 1885 India formed an Indian National Congress which was a group to fight against the British.  Even though the British ignored them the group received a lot of support from the Indian people and it reminded them to take pride in their country. In 1909 the Muslims won the right for separate elections. When Europe attacked Islamic countries, Muslims started to talk about breaking away from the British and forming a separate Muslim state.

Mahatma Gandhi, an important leader in India, didn’t like the way the British were treating the Hindus and Muslims of his country.  He raised support to fight against the British by burning  identity cards, and making salt which was illegal.  When the British attacked the Indians who were making salt Ghandi told the people not to fight back. This made the British look bad.  Over the years Ghandi continued to fight for India’s independence from the British in non-violent ways.

In 1945, after World War II, over 400 million people lived in India. There were 250 million Hindus, 90 million Muslims, 6 million Sikhs, and millions of Sectarians, Buddhist, and Christians. There were 23 main languages, 200 dialects, and 3000 castes. The British government could not control all the different ethnic groups. On August 14, 1947 the British gave power back to India.

Since the Muslims were in the minority they were afraid there say would not matter.  The Muslims and the Hindus started fighting against each other. Ghandi went on a fast and was willing to die if the people would not stop fighting.  Eventually they stopped and India became two separate countries, India and Pakistan. Most of the Muslim population moved to Pakistan and the Hindus moved to India.  Now you know some amazing facts and incredible dates about India’s non-violent independence into two countries.

I knew that India was once controlled by the British. I did not know many of the important dates and events. I learned a lot of bad and good things that happened to India. My research really helped me find great information and helped me write my paper.

The Life of Indira Nehru

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, RyanG, 6E —— ryang @ 11:34 pm

Indira Nehru was daughter of the prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. She was born on November 19, 1917, and would one day be elected prime minister herself. At a very young age, Indira was already interested in politics. During the time of British rule, Indian National Congress workers from Allahabad, never knew when or if the British would arrest them or search their houses. At the age of twelve, Indira lead a group called the Monkey Brigade, a group of kids that worked to find out when and where the British were planning their searches. The Monkey Brigade alerted the people who were going to be arrested. Ultimately this helped to end Britain’s rule in India.
The top officials of the Congress Party were arranging a civil disobedience movement. Indira was sitting in the back seat of the car that held the civil disobedience plans. While Indira waited for the car to leave, a policeman demanded to inspect the car. He would have found the papers, if Indira had not talked to him. Indira told him that she was in an urgent rush for school, and that she would be late if they didn’t leave right away. The policeman finally gave in to Indira’s begging, and let them go without the inspection. The secret of the civil movement had been saved by a young girl. Indira took her job very seriously for a kid so young even though some people thought it was laughable that a child was helping.
In 1936, Indira’s mother died. In 1938, when Indira was 21, she joined something she had always wanted to join: the Indian National Congress Party. When she was 25, she married Feroze Gandhi, a journalist and later they had two sons. On September 11 of that same year, Indira and Feroze were sent to the Naini Central Jail in Allahabad, charged with subversion by the British. They were let out on May 13, the next year.

In 1947, India became free from Britain. That is when Indira’s father was elected prime minister. Indira was elected president of the Indian National Congress in 1959. In 1964, her father died and a new prime minister was elected – his name was Lal Bahadur Shastri. He selected Indira to be minister of information and broadcasting, which was one of the highest positions in the cabinet. Indian’s couldn’t read or write, so radios were important for informing them. She knew this, and encouraged manufacturing of radios that didn’t cost much. She also started a family planning program. The Prime Minister, Shastri died in 1966. Indira was elected as the next prime minister in 1967 and became one of the first women to ever lead a democracy. Using the slogan: “Abolish Poverty”, she was re-elected in 1971. Although in 1977, Indira was voted out of office, she was elected back into the position of prime minister in 1980. She stayed as the prime minister for four years. Her last day leading was also her last day alive, for on October 31, 1984, her bodyguards killed her because they disagreed with one of her political decisions.

Indira had accomplished many improvements for India like improving India’s relationships with other countries, and sending the first satellite into space. Indira did her best as prime minister to improve the lives of Indians.
I have learned a lot more about Indira Nehru/Gandhi then I ever knew. In the beginning, all I knew was that she was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, she was elected prime minister, and she was assassinated. From the Internet, you can learn anything!

The Assassination of Indira Gandhi

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, JabobS, 6E —— jakes @ 11:30 pm

Indira Gandhi was a very important figure in India. She lived in the 20th century, to the age of 66 years. She was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, elected in 1947. At the time, she worked in the Parliament with her husband Feroze Gandhi, also part of the same party, Parsi.

For the next 19 years, she was always involved in the government, in the Parliament. In 1966, she took the position of Prime Minister. She remained in office for the next 11 years when her party was defeated. Three years later, she ran again, and retook the position of Prime Minister. She had made her first enemy, the Sikh leader, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. She maintained the position of Prime Minister for four years until 2 Sikh bodyguards conspired to kill her. She was shot to death when the bodyguards had reached their limit of anger on October 31, 1984 in New Delhi. Riots broke out for the next several days and thousands of Sikhs were killed. Indira Gandhi previously said “If I die a violent death, as some fear and a few are plotting, I know that the violence will be in the thought and the action of the assassins, not in my dying.” But, “Even if I died in the service of my nation, I would be proud of it. Every drop of my blood……… will contribute to the growth of this nation and to make it strong and dynamic”. Despite the tragic ending, she is still remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of India.

Reflection:

I first knew about Indira Gandhi and how she was important in India. When I saw that she was assassinated I was surprised and eager to learn more about the topic. Mr. H had first assigned that we had to do an India Blog Project, where you look up more information about a topic you find interesting. At first, all I knew was that Indira Gandhi was a Prime Minister of India and she was assassinated in 1984. I had found some really good websites and I also got better surfing the web. The sites were highly recommended by Mr. H. I got some really good information and I got to understand more about Indira Gandhi’s Assassination. I found that her enemies were unpredictable and the assassination was what led me to learn about it.

Indira Gandhi the true hero!!!!!

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, AmandaM, 6E, Uncategorized —— amandam @ 6:28 pm

I bet you never thought that you would be a prime ministers daughter! But lets go on a adventure and see how one girl’s life started.

First lets see what your name is. Your name is Indira Gandhi and you were born on November 19, 1917. You were born in Allahabad,UP,India. Your dad is named Jawaharlal Nehru and is India’s first prime minister. Then you grow up a little, and become a beautiful yong woman. Then the people elected you the into the congress in India. But very soon Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri died in 1966 and further more, India now needs a leader then you Indira Gandhi was chosen as a perfect candidate to replace him. You were elected to the office in 1967. In 1975 you were convicted of cheating in the 1971 election and the Highest Court in India made you resign. But you declared a state of emergency. Then the high court took back on the charges and then you went for the 1979 election. But you lost the election. But then had a great comeback in 1980 and then you ran again to be the prime minister and got elected again!!!But then a horrible thing happened on October 31, 1984, you, Indira Gandhi. Sikh bodyguards assassinated you.Wasn’t that a cool adventure I guess you are a true hero.(Or Indira Gandhi is.)And long live the true hero!!!!

What I learned from doing this topic is that you have to fight for what you believe and trust it and even better follow your dreams and live life fighting for what you want believe and care for just like Indira Gandhi.

Let me tell you about an amazing women who once said “If I die a violent death as some fear and a few are plotting, I know that violence will be in the thought and the action of the assassin not in my death”. This amazing women’s name is Indira Gandhi, who was one of the first women to be elected prime minister of India.
Indira Nehra Gandhi was born November 19, 1917 to the future prime minister who was her father Jawaharlal. Her political life started when she was 12 years old. She led a children’s group that was trying to end the controlling of India by the British. Indira couldn’t wait till she was 21 so she could join the Indian National Congress Party (INCP) to continue her political life. Then in 1942 when she was 25 she married a journalist named Feroze Gandhi shortly after they were married British sent them to prison for 8 months when they got out they had 2 babies.
Indira traveled with her dad when he was prime minister because her mother died. This gave her the chance to meet famous political people. When Indira was 42 she became the fourth women to become president of INCP. A lot of people couldn’t read so they needed to be able to buy cheap radios so they could listen to the news.

On October 31,1984 she was assassinated by her bodygaurds they did this to get back at her for storming the Golden Temple.

There are many great people in the world. But did you ever think about Gandhi? Well if you don’t know much about Gandhi I will start by saying Gadhi defended Indian rights.Than after in England he studied law. Then he spent 20 years defending rights again, but not for the Indian people for immigrants in South Africa. Are you getting to know Ganhdi at all yet? Well if not I will give you more information. In 1914 he went back to India and then became a leader of the Indian National Congress.Gandhi was not a fan of violence at all, in fact he urged nonviolence and civil diobedience. Even though Gandhi is not here does not [mean] he is not with us. By, Amber Rose

Quotes from Gandhi……

“Violent men have not been known in history to die to a man. They die up to a point.”

“Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacities. She has the right to participate in the minutest details in the activities of man, and she has an equal right of freedom and liberty with him.”

“Hatred ever kills, love never dies such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.”  I got my quotes at: The Official Mahatma Gandhi eArchive & Reference Library.

Before I did this project I didn’t know the true meaning of Gandhi. Now I understand the true meaning, and what he did to help the Indian rights.

Mohandas Gandhi

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, MeaganT, 6E —— meagant @ 12:04 pm

Have you ever wondered why everyone says Mohandas Gandhi is such a good person and how he made non-violent protests that colored men and women should have the same rights as the rest of us? Well if you were I’ve got some answers for you.

The man we know as Gandhi was born with the name Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born in Porbandar, Gujarat in 1869. He was the son of Karamchand Ghandi and Putlibai Ghandi. Ghandi went to school in Rajkot, a nearby town. He was a shy boy growing up. Ghandi was married at the age of 13 in 1883 to Kasturba Makhanji. He had four sons named Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas, and Devdas.

You see, Gandhi moved to South Africa in the early nineteen hundreds. There he didn’t stop working until he gained the rights of Asian Africans. He did this by putting his beliefs into action. His beliefs were listening to the inner voice which the believed was God. This voice told him that people should have no violent actions and just because someone believed in something else than your religion, that you should not put them down for it. And when he protested this so many people in this country agreed with him the government backed down.

He returned to India in 1915 to his family and friends. There he began a non-violent movement satyagraha, or ‘truth force’ through this truth force he became the head of the Indian National congress. They fought against the British government and they ruled India. So even though the Muslims were hurting India he also looked at it from the Muslims point of view and how the India’s were hurting them too. So now do you see what Gandhi did and how he made a difference in the world today. Well I sure did and I also learned how to search the web a LOT easier.

Gandhi’s non-violent movement to free India

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, MichaelM, 6E —— michaelm @ 11:36 pm

Some people would say “Gandhi who?” Others would say, “oh yea, I know him”. But I would say Gandhi, the man who saved India from Great Britain.

Mahandas Gandhi lived from October 2,1869 - January 30,1948. He grew up into a Hindu family in Gujarat, India. The Hindu philosophy teaches people to live in peace and tranquillity through nature. Gandhi always was loyal to this philosophy and practiced non violence and truth even in the hardest times. He studied law in England and spent 20 years defending the rights of Indian immigrants in South Africa. He went back to India in 1914 and became the leader of the Indian National Government. Through the teachings of Satyagrah, which is fighting back a cruel government through non violent ways, he started the move for India’s independence from Britain.

Britain abused the Indian people and treated them like slaves with no rights. Gandhi said “We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to the the perpetuation of our slavery”. Gandhi used non violent ways like the Quit India Movement to win independence. The Quit India Movement was when Gandhi told the people to abandon everything British, like schools, courts, products, to resign from government employment, stop paying taxes and to give back all British titles and honors. Gandhi always said that the movement should not be against the British people but the unfair government. Ten million people in India listened to his ideas and followed his guidelines, but in 1922 he decided to stop the protest because hundreds of policemen were killed by angry people who didn’t agree with Gandhi.

Gandhi went to jail for seven years and believed it was honorable to go to jail for a just cause. He fasted in jail to draw attention to India’s problems through this non violent action and in 1947 Gandhi participated in neogotaions that finally led to India’s independence. The independence movement served as a major start for other movements in different parts of the world, leading up to the eventual disappearance of the British Empire.

Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu fanatic. This is pretty sad considering he led a life preaching non violence and of all things to die out of violence.

Before this project I would have been the one saying “Gandhi who?”, but now after researching, I have learned many things about this gentle peaceful man and how his non violent ideas influenced other great men like Martin Luther King, Jr.

500 BC when Buddhism started in India

Filed under: History of India, Social Studies, ConnorD, 6E —— connord @ 11:13 pm

Today in India, Buddhism is not practiced by a lot of people. Only 1% of India’s people are Buddhist. Buddhism started in 500 BC. A prince named Siddhartha Gautama was the founder of Buddhism. Siddhartha came from a very wealthy family. Siddhartha lived in a palace which he never left. Until one day he left and saw poverty, sickness, and misery. Siddhartha felt bad for the people so he had to do something. Now he wanted to leave his palace and his rich life forever. He also gave his rich belongings to the poor. He found a group that was searching for the same enlightenment as he was. These people could have died of starvation because they gave up all the basics of life to feel good about themselves. At some point Siddhartha realized that this was not the right way towards enlightenment. He thought that the right path was somewhere in the middle which he called the “middle path”.
Siddhartha found his enlightenment, while sitting under a fig tree and fighting many temptations. In his area the people that were enlightened were called Buddha.  Now Siddhartha was called Buddha.
Buddhism practices no violence. Buddha got mad at other customs that killed animals for religious ceremonies. People who religiously practice being a Buddhist are vegetarians, but they say that Buddha died from eating a sick animal. Buddhism does not have a god it believes in goodness of one self with life.
Now you know about how Buddhism got to India in 500 BC. You also learned who brought it to India.

“Mahatma” Gandhi…

Filed under: History of India, EmilyM, 6E —— emilym @ 11:03 pm

Have you ever wondered what happened back then? Well I have and I’m sure you have too. This is about that and how a man lived his years in different places…

This mans name was “Mahatma” Gandhi and he was born in Probander - or what is now called Gujarat - on December 2, 1869. He went to school near Rajkot which was close to where his father worked as the prime minister (adviser) for the local ruler. When Gandhi was thirteen years old, he got married to a twelve year old named Kasturba. Later on, Gandhi had four sons who’s names are, Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas, and Devdas. When he was older, he went to London to study law and soon went back to India to practice. In the year 1893, he was offered a one year contract to do (legal) work in South Africa. During that time, he worked on securing rights for the indian people. In 1915, Gandhi decided to go back to India.  In the time of 15 years, he became the leader of the ‘Indian nationalist movement’. Gandhi led campaigns for Indian independence from Britian because they had taken over India at the time, but Gandhi ended up getting arrested by the British for all of the campaigns held trying to get the freedom they deserved. Later on in 1947, India was granted their peace. Years after, Gandhi was assasinated by a so called, hindu fanatic.

That was the life of a generous man who was willing to put in anything he could to get freedom for India…

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes”

“It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.”

“An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”

One thing that I’m really interested in, is that I learned about how Gandhi died and what he went through during his life. It was deffinetly surprising to hear what kind of things he had to say about the world like [is written] up above. What was interesting though was that I think Mahatma means “great soul”. Thats what the Indians called him…

The Kiwa Hirsuta… ever hear of it?

Could you believe that this… ugly thing resembles a lobster?

Kiwa Hirsuta

Well, it does and it was found near Paris, France by some American-led divers in the south pacific. Scientists named the animal the Kiwa Hirsuta. The animal is also said to be so distinct from many other species, that they made a new family and genus for it. The Kiwa Hirsuta was found in waters 2,300 meters - or 7,540 feet - deep at a location 1,500 kilometers - or 900 miles - south of easter island last year. This crustacean is 15 centimeters long and is white. CNN reports that it is about the size of a “salad plate”. One suprising characteristic is that it has “sinuous hair-like strands on its pinchers. The Kiwa Hirsuta is also blind and its family is named Kiwaida. Thats all the info I could get, but I’ll let you know if there is anymore on the Kiwa Hirsuta.
