The Enlightenment

September 8th, 2006 by Mr. Hetherington in History · Mr. H · No Comments

Several 7th graders (Maya, EmelieV, Heather A., and Meghan) came in today with questions from Mr. Huntington’s class about the English and French thinkers from the Enlightenment. Here is a link to a set of notes titled Class 9: The French Enlightenment describing that period in history.

Two Treatises of Government by John Locke

The notes on Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Adam Smith, Jean-Jacques Rousseau are short but serve as a nice summary of their important accomplishments. Many of their ideas formed the foundation for the philosophies of the founding fathers of the United States.
Thank you Paul Halsall Ph.D. History from Fordham University and the Internet History Sourcebooks Project.

Surprisingly, nobody has posted anything for quite awhile…( it took me an hour to remember my password) And seeing how the summers almost over, it would be wise to go on your PC. While you do so, here are some sites to visit. Go to YouTube for all the latest videos(in fact in a article I read they are trying to purchase every music video ever made) For awesome games to make your hand-eye-coordination better go to, JoyTube. Have a good end of the summer everyone.

Blue = Chocolate Ice Cream

Red = Vanilla Ice Cream

Google has an interesting new site called Google Trends. It allows you to review search patterns from the Google search database. In the above example, I asked Google Trends to compare searches for Chocolate v. Vanilla Ice Cream (I like Vanilla.) The site also provides information on the countries where most of the searches come from and the language most often used. Try it out. You can compare anything; Yankee’s and Red Sox, Math and Science, Dogs and Cats etc. Share some of your findings in the comments section.

The Two Greatest Car Manufacturers In The World!!

July 7th, 2006 by kostaz in Original Ideas · KostaZ · 6H · Science · 2 Comments

Everyone has their favorite car manufacturers but my favorites are BMW and Mercedes-Benz. I have always hade a thing for luxury cars and speed. These two cars give it both. My alltime favorite cars from both Mercedes and BMW are the two flagship (if the company had a flag that car would go on it) cars. The flagship car for Mercedes is the S-600. The flagship car for BMW is the 760Li. Both of these cars are fast and offer luxury. The Mercedes “STAR” stand for “land, air, and sea” because those are the engines they make. BMW stands For “Bavarian Motor Works”

Hogan Knows Best

July 6th, 2006 by stephanier in StephanieR · 6E · 3 Comments

If all you people have a favorite show what is it and why? Well I have one. It’s Hogan Knows Best. It’s a family show that tells what they do and how they live. The father is a wrestler. The mother is a stay home mom taking care of her 15 year old son Nick and 18 year old Brooke. Brook is a singer and her album will come out soon. Well Nick just likes working on his car and he may take over the father’s job cause his father has to stop working, thats how bad his injurys are. With a lower back problem, Linda his wife says STOP wrestling. So now you have the scoop on the show, so watch sometime and you will  love it.

Look at that thing!

July 6th, 2006 by sarah in Animals · SaraH · 6V · Science · 3 Comments

You look down and see an animal that is mostly clear. A small tail tucks in as the little creature squiggles around a bit. After minute’s of staring you finally recognize it as a shrimp. A ghost shrimp to be exact.

Ghost shrimps are peaceful creatures that are a good choice for aquariums. Although ghost shrimp are small so putting them in an aquarium with fish mean’s you’re taking a risky chance. You better put many hiding spots if you’re putting them with fish!

Ghost shrimps are clear making part’s in there body visible. If you look closely you might see the food they ate {Sorry for the grossness}. These shrimp also have ten pair’s of legs. The first four include tiny claws on the ends.

Ghost shrimp’s are amazing animal’s in many ways. You should go get one and observe it’s fine details. Good luck!

Goodbye Everything of Sixth Grade.

June 27th, 2006 by sarah in Classroom Happenings · SaraH · 6V · 3 Comments

We’ve had good times, and bad times in sixth grade. We’ve had time’s where we all laugh, and time’s where someone is toast. Anyways, we’ve all had many times, and they all are important in their own special way.

I’d just like to thank everyone for making all those “time’s” happen whether they were good or bad.

Also, I hope everyone has a good summer and I’ll see alot of you next year!

**Ps: This will be my last post on Room 613 Student Blogs. Thanks Mr. Hetherington for making the blog in the first place. =’)

When You Left
by Sarah D.

I’m lying in bed
Your voice is in my head
Can’t get you out of my mind
You were so friendly so kind
All the good times we had
Until we got really mad
Things have changed since you went away

My heart is empty
Everythings a blurr
I wish things were back to how they were
Things have changed since you went away

Everythings quiet
I don’t know what to do
All I can say is that I really miss you
Things have changed since you went away

Everythings different
Everythings changed
And now that your gone things won’t be the same
Things have changed since you went away

Why Me??

June 14th, 2006 by allieb in Poetry · 6V · 2 Comments

Why Me?

By Allie B

Every day when you walk into school you trip up the steps and ask, “Why me?”

Every day some one makes fun of you, you ask “Why me”

Every night your dinner’s cold and no ones home and you ask “Why me?’

Every dream is a night mare waiting to come true and you ask “Why me?”

Every step aches from sleeping on the floor and you ask “Why me?”

Every smile is crooked, bent and ugly, and you ask “Why me?”

And every boy seams to hurt you and you ask, “Why me ?”

And every girl seams to hate you so, ask “Why me?”

Every thing goes wrong and you ask, “Why me?”

But then you stop tripping, and there are no teasing voices, but “Why?”

And dinners hot and the tables crowded, but, “Why?’

And at night it’s soft beds and sweet dreams, but “Why?’

And your smile doesn’t seem as bad, but “Why?’

Boys are nice and no more rumors are spread, but “Why?”

And everything is right. Why? Because you’ve got a friend who takes you into her house, her family, under her wing. You’re safe, she saves you.

There is someone everywhere who experiences, “Why me?”’s and there are friends who help them, so be a friend and stop “why me” ’s from hitting your school.

Live Each Day……

By Allie B

Live each day like the sun won’t come up again,

Live each day like the world will blow tomorrow,

Live each day like you were dying

Live each day to it’s fullest

Life doesn’t have a purpose with- out the kid that sits behind you just to make you crack up!

Live each day like it will be your last laugh

Live each day like the person you love most will disappear

Live each day for the smiles will fade

Live each day peacefull and happy

Live each day until it’s your last!

Dedicated to all those who take their life for granted.

The Ultimate Loch Ness Monster!

June 14th, 2006 by sarah in SaraH · 6V · 5 Comments

Nessy — The Ultimate Loch Ness Monster

The ultimate Loch Ness monster otherwise known as Nessy is a tale that has been going on for years.

First we’ll start off talking about Nessy’s appearance. Nessy is supposedly supposed to look like a salamander kind of with a long neck, chubby body, four fins, and a tail.

So far their is no proof of Nessy’s existence but many people claim to have seen him or her but they do know where Nessy lives, that place would be Loch Ness!

Deciding if Nessy is real or not is hard to decide, especially when you see how many people claim to have once seen the beautiful monster and some evidence they have found.

Here is tooth supposedly belonging to Nessy:

But then again, their are many things that could be mistaken for this creature such as in this case. The following picture was believed to be actual proof of nessy for quite some time but then one person found out that this was an imposter. Very sadening if you ask me!

Using this we can now say that how do we know that these people arent lying about what they saw or maybe someone is setting an imposter. Plus, this tale has been carried on for years, I would think that Nessy would have died by now. Unless, maybe, just maybe Nessy is breeding! Plus, dont you think that if Nessy was real someone other then best friends that could be setting a scam would have seen him or her by now? I mean, where could the tooth had come from? A dinasaur perhaps?

Is Nessy real or fake? What do you think?

We’ve Been Reviewed! Thank You Room 140!

June 5th, 2006 by Mr. Hetherington in Social Studies · Mr. H · Classroom Happenings · 3 Comments

Recently our weblog was reviewed by 7th grade students from another school. As part of their assignment, the students of Room 140 were asked to read and blog about five student blogs from around the world. Room 613 Student Blogs was first on their review list and many students made very positive comments on your work. Here are just a few of the comments from the Room 140 students:
“I think that the blogs are very interesting. I think so because they are detailed and persuasive. The one that I liked the most was Room 613 Student Blogs because they had very interesting articles. One of them was The Poison Dart Frog. This article gives me immense information on the frog such as what it looks like, how it can harm us, and they also provide pictures of it.”

Way to go Kosta!

“I read multitudes of middle school blogs today were interesting and interactive, but some are not. There was one blog titled “Room 613″ and it was truly amazing. There blog had astonishing details and animation. There is an ocean of articles and information in this blog. In this blog I found a game called club penguin. The person who wrote this made that game sound exiting and not boring. The blog about Club Penguin told you how to play the game and was very detailed.”

Good Job SaraH.

“The kids in Room 613 have one of those blog sites. What makes this site so cool is that it talks about a lot of stuff, like as if they can right whatever they want, but isn’t that what a blog is for…YEA! They talk about the Three Gorge Dam, humorous photos, TV programs, science, space, etc. This blog also is like the normal life of a middle school kid, fun and interesting. It is very interesting and made me not want to stop reading it. Because of its perfect combination of pictures and text, it will always make a person wide awake and might teach them something in the process.”

And finally

WOW! You have a really creative and informative page. Love your pictures because it catches reader’s attention. The banana phone is really funny. Maybe that will be the next popular thing. The links where you got the information from is a very helpful tool. I like that you have multiple information. Such as science, some history, and important people. It’s like a one stop information page. Your writing is excellent as well, big words and great opinions.

Room 613 Students, I’m very proud of your accomplishments this year. Keep writing!

Mr. H.

The Lion King Play

May 27th, 2006 by annb6h in Plays · AnnB · 6H · No Comments

Over the weekend I got to see The Lion King at the Bushnell. I would recommend the fascinating play to anyone. It has the classic story with amazing costumes. My favorite part was in the beginning when they sang “The Circle of Life.” All the animal appeared and my favorite one was the elephant that must have had four people in the legs. The lioness had excellent masks. The costumes were made so you could see the face of the actor but so they still looked life like. Also the singers did excellent, even the monkey that portrayed her part excellently. I would give this play five stars *****. Go see for yourself!!!!!!!!!!!

Student Council by AllieB

May 27th, 2006 by allieb in Classroom Happenings · AllieB · 6V · 1 Comment

As student council is coming to end and the new elections are being held next year I think. I better inform you all about it!

Student council is an excellent program. That is why you should run for it! The awesome activities after school are sure to keep you busy! There are also meetings every other Friday morning. We also hold dances, activity nights and fundraisers, such as the candy stick sale. Council members help collect food for drives and help out with things such as the upcoming art show. Also we get into most sponsored dances free!

There is also our director, Mr Jollif! He is very nice and fun and keeps us all in line. He organizes our field trips to conferences, our fun dances and activity nights. He also greets us every morning with an announcement sheet. Some(times) we can talk on the morning annoucements. Mr J also goes and gets us donuts, o.j. and bagels. All in all Mr J rocks!

Last but not least is the meetings. Each meeting is semi packed with fun ideas and thoughts for the up coming events. We discuss the last event we held and talk about how much $money$ we made. We have so much fun, sometimes we goof around but you didn’t hear it from me! Student council is the greatest activity in school and keeps you always busy!

So next year I hope you run for the fun and fantastic Student Council!

Slow Dance

May 27th, 2006 by kelleyl6h in Poetry · KelleyL · 6H · 3 Comments

Do you run through each day

On the fly?

When you ask “how are you”?

Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done

Do you lie in your bed

With the next hundred chores

running through your head.

You’d better slow down

Don’t dance so fast.

Time is short.

The music won’t last.

Ever told your child,

We’ll do it tomorrow?

And in your haste,

not see thier sorrow?

Ever lost touch,

Let a good friendship die

Cause you never had time

To call and say, “Hi”

You’d better slow down.

Don’t dance so fast.

Time is short.

The music won’t last.

When you run fast to get somewhere

You miss half the fun getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,

Its like and unopened gift….

Thrown away.

Life is not a race

So do take it slower

Hear the music

Before the song is over.

Written by David L. Weatherford and published under his name in 1991.

Live everyday of your life like you were dying.

Can We sign your cast Barbaro?

May 27th, 2006 by allieb in Animals · AllieB · 6V · 1 Comment

Barbaro the winner of the Kentucky Derby broke his legand had 23 screws put in during his 5 hour surgery! Barbaro is supended in a warm water pool during recovery and will stay there as long as possible. They might have put him down since the surgery cost a little under 1 million dollars and he will suffer much pain at times, not to mention the risk of disease. They have decided to keep him alive because he is an expensive horse and can be kept for breeding. Although he may not live ( he only has a 50% chance of surviving) he legend will. The day started and he was ready for the race. He had already won the Kentucky Derby! A false start was called on him. He must have been nervous and excited all at once, and could have popped the bone slightly in the false start. As he made his way out his was some 8/13 around the track when the jockey must have heard a pop! The jockey stopped him from going on(this is only what I have heard from the onlookers ) “they saved his live” some one said! But he is alive and now is recovering!

Oliver Twist

May 18th, 2006 by sarah in Book Reviews · Classroom Happenings · SaraH · 6V · No Comments

Oliver Twist

Just recently in the sixth grade chorus we finished performing the play, Oliver Twist.

Oliver Twist is about a little boy named Oliver who is an orphan who finds himself living in a work house owned by Mr. Bumble but after Oliver asks for more gruel he gets transfered to an undertaker. Oliver doesnt seem to like his new home with undertakers so he runs away and is found on the street by a boy named Jack Dawkins, who offers him shelter in a house owned by Fagin. Fagin is a man who trains orphans to pick pockets for him. Oliver stays with them for awhile but once he goes on his first “mission” involving stealing a hankerchief Oliver becomes scared and runs away. Then he is found by owner of the hankerchief and a man named Mr. Brownlow, who takes care of Oliver for awhile while he is fainted but then Mr. Brownlow’s and Oliver’s relationship is ruined when a man named Bill Sikes finds him and takes him back to Fagins hideout. Will Oliver be happy to be back with Fagin? Will he want to return to Mr. Brownlow? Will Oliver become a pick pocket master? Read the book, watch another play or see the movie of Oliver Twist to find out what happens.

Anyways, It was a blast, however, we had a little problem with opening the curtains but eventually the whole play went good and everyone pulled off a great performance!

The Three Gorges Dam!

May 10th, 2006 by michelles in Three Gorges Dam · MichelleS · 6V · 2 Comments

The Three Gorges Dam is located in China and is one of those things where it is getting built and yet some people are still very unhappy with it. I know I dont like the idea at all! Some people say “well it’s already about half built and it would be a waste of millions of dollars to stop now and we would go back to polluting the air with nuclear power plants.” The Three Gorges Dam is designed to generate 18.2 million kilowatts of electricity. That is 1/7 of Chinas total electricity for a year and it equals to 18 nuclear power plants. It will reduce air pollution that would have been made from nuclear power plants and it will control down river flooding. One thing that most people like about the dam is that it lets boats and ships go 1500 miles further inland. Others say “this is damaging the environment just stop now.” The dam will kill many animals including birds and fish. Also the dam will put 150,000 acres under water that include 140 towns, 320 villages, 1500 factories and many historical sites. So as this is all going under water more then 1 million people will be relocated.
So after all there is a debate some people may like the idea of finishing the dam and some may hate the idea. “I hate the idea to finish the dam it will put so many historical sites under water and then the history will be gone!” explained Heather. “Plus”, added Allie “it will cost around 32 billion dollars and it may not stop flooding”. “It will let boats move 1500 miles further inland, but it will slow them down because they will have to go around the dam in the locks or elevator.”

Lion King 2 Summary

May 9th, 2006 by sarah in Movies · SaraH · 6V · No Comments

Lion King 2 Summary

Director: Darrel Rooney / Co-Director: Rob LaDuca

Voice Cast: Matthew Broderick (Simba), Neve Campbell (Kiara), Andy Dick (Nuka), Robert Guillaume (Rafiki), James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Moira Kelly (Nala), Nathan Lane (Timon), Jason Marsden (Kovu), Suzanne Pleshette (Zira), Ernie Sabella (Pumbaa), Michelle Horn (Young Kiara)

As we all know, The Lion King left off with a new cub born. Her name, Kiara. In the beginning they show Kiara growing up. Being a adventurous and very curious cub. She was thrilled alot just by chasing grasshoppers! Although, Simba was very overprotective in the movie. He even gave her “guards”, Timon and Pumbaa, as Zazu was his own. Also, Simba tries hard to follow in his fathers paw prints.

Later on in the story, Kiara manages to escape from Timon and Pumbaa and explore the Pride Lands on her own. She finds Kovu on her adventure, a young male lion, like any other lion, persay, except he was one that was banished from the Pride Lands like the rest of his family. But to Kiara, that didnt matter. She thought that they were all equal and all the same. If only the others could see that too…

Kovu’s mother dislikes Kiara and her family very much, for they are the generations of Lion that have thrown them out of the family for obvious reasons. Simba forbids Kiara from having contact (friendship) with Kovu. Kovu’s mother does the same, untill she realizes that this may give her the chance she has been waiting for. Think about it, Kovu could get into Kiara’s family, “become one of them”, and then turn on them. That way her son (Kovu) could become the King.

Will Kovu take over the pride lands? What will happen to Kovu and Kiara’s love? Will It fade away? To find out go watch the movie, and remember like It says in the Lion King Two song I posted earlier, “Love is never wrong and so It never dies,” Think about that and I’m sure It will give you a big hint to what the movie is about!

Thank you so much to this website for alot of the Information and Pictures!

The Unicorn Battle

By SaraH

Once there was a unicorn battle,

the trickster trolls begun,

the red blood dripping from their horns,

showing they are done, they tried and tried,

day and night, until there day had come,

to disapear in the night forever an days to come.

Don’t Build It

April 25th, 2006 by omyiad in Three Gorges Dam · OmayiaD · 6L · No Comments

When the Three Gorges Dam is completed in 2009, it will be the largest dam/hydroelectric plant ever created. And, like many large projects, whether or not it should be built is controversial. But before you decide what side you’re on, you need to know a little more about the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River.

The Three Gorges Dam project was started in 1994 and is expected to be complete in 2009. It will be 610 feet high and 1.3miles wide. Its main purposes will be to control flooding and to provide much needed clean electricity. The dam’s annual goal is to match 10 nuclear power plants. But though it sounds like it invites no arguments, the Three Gorges Dam has drawbacks.

The Three Gorges Dam will create a reservoir 370 miles long and 525 feet deep. This reservoir is the cause of a mass relocation of people. Over 1.2 million people will be relocated. Many of the people who have already been relocated are having trouble adjusting to their new jobs, homes, and lives. For example, one couple was placed on a plot of land 2/3 the size of their old property. In their old home they had an annual income of $1,200. Now though, their income has dropped to $240. The building of this dam puts stress on the people who live on the planned reservoir site.

The Three Gorges Dam reservoir will not only flood more than 320 villages, 140 towns, and close to 1,600 industries, it will also flood 16 important archeological sites. The archeologists are racing to uncover secrets of the past and ancient artifacts. They have even found evidence of an advanced early culture. All of this new knowledge of the past will be lost in the reservoir flooding.

When the Three Gorges Dam reservoir floods the many cities and industries, the pollution from those areas will be absorbed into the reservoir. This pollution will harm the many animals that live around that area, including the already endangered Siberian Crane, Chinese Tiger, and Yangtze River Dolphin. The Chinese government is working to help the people being relocated. But what about the animals, they can’t be relocated. Many people fear that the pollution that will be absorbed into the reservoir will lead endangered animals to extinction and lead regular animals to be endangered.

Think of this: people are angered, animals suffer, and money is wasted all because of something that won’t work. This scenario is what critics expect in the future for the Three Gorges Dam. Supporters may say that the benefits of clean electricity and flood control that they expect surpass the losses. But what if the dam fails? For example, the dam is supposed to create electricity and control flooding. But the conditions don’t match. To control flooding, water levels in the reservoir must be low to deal with oncoming water flow. But to create electricity, water levels must be high to maintain constant pressure on the turbines. The conditions just don’t match. Also, silt and bedrock carried by the river may eventually get into the dam, causing the turbines to clog and stop producing electricity. The silt and rocks may also pile up on the reservoir floor, causing floods.

What is the point of building a 32 billion dollar dam that causes people stress, dangers animals, floods important archeological sites, and destroys the scenic view of Three Gorges that might not even work?! Instead of building such a complicated dam, use the money to repair already built dikes and dams along the Yangtze, and build smaller hydroelectric plants on the Yangtze River. These smaller dikes, dams, and hydroelectric plants would not cause so much controversy and damage. These things would do all the things the Three Gorges Dam is supposed to and not cause so much damage. Why then, would you build the Three Gorges Dam, when you have such a promising alternative?

Currently In Language Arts Class!

Currently in Language Arts class we received our pen pal letters back from Italy. Most of us, if not all have made our pen pal letter response over the vacation. Now, we are all working on making a poem to also send to our pen pals. The poem is called a “Cinquain”. One of the highlights of a Cinquain was that in my class alot of the kids were making a connection of how Cinquain and Mark Twain kind of rhyme. I thought that was kind of funny. Anyways, I’m sure some of the sixth grade students will post there poem later, like I am going too. So look forward to all those Cinquains!

One more thing, If anybody out there ever needs the pattern on how to make a Cinquain I’ll post it here.

—-xx—-

First Line: Topic name

Second Line: Two adjectives about your Topic.

Third Line: Three verbs about your Topic.

Fourth Line: Four words explaining your emotions on the topic that you picked for Line One.

Fifth Line: One synonym for the topic on Line One.
